Summer Student Article

Law has always been a subject that I had an interest in, but I did not consider pursuing it as a career until I made my university application. Regardless of having no prior experience or academic knowledge of the subject, I was eager to dive head-first into the bottomless abyss of legislation, justice, and order.

A family friend who has gone through the summer programme herself recommended Brewer Harding and Rowe to me, as I was looking for a local placement at the time. At first, I was unsure and very intimidated; do I have what it takes to work in a place like this? Is this something that is for me? I felt underqualified and quite scared until I showed up to my interview, but the moment I met Wendy Johnson and the rest of the team at Bideford, I couldn’t have felt more relieved and welcome. The atmosphere was not uptight and intense like I expected, but instead very accommodating and friendly.

The staff at the Bideford office were wonderful and always there to help. Whenever I wasn’t sure about something or needed assistance, someone would always take the time to help me. During my short time at the office, I really felt included and like part of the team.

During my time with the firm, I was hoping to broaden my understanding of different types of law and possibly decide what area I would like to specialise in after my degree. My understanding of Family, Conveyancing and Probate has improved, as I had very limited knowledge of these departments beforehand. I have also developed better time management, further improved my communication skills, gained interpersonal skills, sharpened my analytical skills, and became comfortable working under pressure.

I have mainly worked in reception during my time at the firm, but I did have the chance to attend a court hearing and do admin work for the family department. I enjoyed doing reception work as I got to converse with clients and oversee a lot of admin work that I had never done before. There were times when it was hectic and demanding to be on reception alone due to not having much prior training or experience, but I believe I adapted well. I had the support of my colleagues, and I am very grateful for that.

I am entering my third year of university in October and I can confidently say I am going back more excited and inspired than ever. Whether or not I pursue a career in law in the future, I am determined to get the best out of my degree with my newfound knowledge and experience from my placement at Brewer Harding & Rowe.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity I was given by Brewer Harding & Rowe and wish everyone at the firm the best of luck in the coming years.
